Ever wanted to attend a BDSM / sub Hunt?

I've been having a few private conversations with friends and other BDSM event organizers about screening processes. Fetlife has just celebrated a million members with John Baku reminding us:
"What does reaching a million members mean to us kinksters? It means that each and every one of us is not alone. It means there is no such thing as normal (as was taught to me as a kid). It means that we don't have to be ashamed of who we are sexually - nor should we be! And most importantly, it means we can be ourselves!"
One feature I liked right from the start about Fet was it's emphasis on real time events. At a time when kinksters were increasingly moving online, the popularity of Fet's real time geographic groups and event pages means that these days we often judge the "realness" of a member of Fet by the number and type of real time events they are seen to attend. This means there are now a lot more people wanting to attend BDSM events and some event organizers are finding some sort of screening process is required, even for informal events like munches.

I get asked about screening processes because I've already introduced one for a local munch group, but I've also developed different screening processes for events like Femdom tea parties (where potential servers are requested to fill in a questionnaire that not only provides hostesses with their interests, experience levels and service orientation) or other high protocol events. However the screening process I receive the most questions about is for BDSM / sub hunts.

Not all hunt organizers do much in the way of screening. In fact, if I'm brutally honest about this, one way you can differentiate fantasy hunters from organizers who really hold hunts is by watching the way their screening process continually updates to deal with issues and problems that become apparent during real time events. It's a similar process to establishing personal House Rules or protocols ... the more experience you have, the more you put those rules or protocols into practice, the more the rules and protocols are modified to reflect your actual needs and desires.

Let me give you an example. Let's look at the extremely popular Cruel Huntress hunts in the UK, organized by MsAdventure. You'll find info about the application process on MsAdventure's website (hunters here, prey here), and this process is confirmed by a post by MistressWatchful who notes it involves a written application, references which require "validation" plus "no-one was allowed on the Hunt without prior interview". However promo posts for the most recent hunt (in October 2011) show changes, in particular relating to the size of the Hunt and the number of prey:
"We are pleased to announce the date for the final Cruel Huntress Hunt for 2011 which will be held on Saturday 1st October. This Hunt will be an event with a difference and as such we will be strictly limiting the numbers of those who attend. Due to the very limited availability we will firstly be offering places to those that have previously attended before we consider opening it to others, invite emails will be sent out shortly."
The result is that some of their hunts will now be invitation only, with Djinn_bleu noting:
This particular Hunt is looking like invite only meaning only those who have attended will get the chance to attend simply because of the limited places available
How do you get invited? Djinn again:
"Easiest thing to do if you want to register your interest for any future Hunts is to become a member of the msadventure website, that way you will be on the mailing list and next time there is a Hunt you will get an email"
Because of the nature of hunting, invitation only is not a bad way to go. These are not easy events to organize, as MsAdventure has found:
"In April 2009 we had an idea to bring the concept of the cruel huntress hunts from the realms of simply being an on line fantasy into the real world we could have never anticipated what the next seven months could have had in store for us.

"For anyone that has ever organised an event i take my hat off to you, until you have done this i don't think you can even begin to imagine the amount of work that is involved in doing such a thing, from the finding a suitable venue, advertising, coordinating and planning and then the very worst but of it all hoping people will attend..."
Hunts are probably one of the trickiest BDSM events to organize. Think about it for a minute. You have a scattered group with diverse interests in a potentially hostile outdoor environment, where play can get very rough and painful and the risk of injury is high.

The fact that Cruel Huntress hunts - both the hunts themselves and the application process - continue to be modified shows a lot of care is going into their organization. Which is reflected in their popularity. Every hunt is unique, and every hunt organizer works differently, but I'm sure most will agree that the more familiar you are with the other players, the more you know about the people you are hunting / are hunting with, the better your final event works. This is why we created our Questionnaire for Prospective Hunters and prey. But that's only one part of the screening process.

We found in depth screening was necessary for several reasons. Firstly the topic of hunting humans does tend to bring a few scary people out wanting to play - as I replied to a friend in the UK the other day, we've had people wanting to attend hunts who ask "can I bring my machine gun?" and "where do we store the bodies, after?".

Secondly, some local events are held on private land owned of members of the hunt, so (as with Femdom tea parties) you need to know who you are handing out personal address details to. I think MsAdventure has it right when she holds the Cruel Huntress hunts at DV8 in Medway, Kent ("private woodland where we will be able hunt in total seclusion; there is also access to a fully furnished dungeon in which captured prey can be further tormented, if the Huntresses so desire"). This is a great way to hunt and it protects everyone's privacy. But having to pay for a venue does up the costs.

Third, we found with hunting that you really needed info about people's medical history. As many of us know, new play partners have a tendency to conceal medical issues. You can't risk that with hunting. It's a physical sport and often strenuous. The last thing you want is someone aggravating a pre existing medical condition or suffering an injury that could have been avoided if they had been up front about their health. So we ended up enlarging the single medical query on the original application form to a BDSM Hunt Medical Checklist. This is similar to the type of form some players (often those who've encountered problems) request new play partners to fill in.

Thank you for your interest in attending our Hunts. Due to the very private nature of these events we utilize a BDSM screening program which consists of:

  • BDSM Checklist

We require you to complete the first two before arranging the third and sending you the fourth. If you've not encountered BDSM screening before, you might like to read Sensuous Sadie's excellent article about why BDSM event organizers sometimes need to screen.

Before you begin the paperwork let's talk a bit about BDSM hunting, to make sure we have similar ideas in mind. Wiki defines hunting as:
"the practice of pursuing any living thing, usually wildlife, for food, recreation, or trade. In present-day use, the term refers to lawful hunting, as distinguished from poaching, which is the killing, trapping or capture of the hunted species contrary to applicable law ... Hunting can also involve the elimination of vermin, as a means of pest control to prevent diseases caused by overpopulation..."

If you have human hunting fantasies you might like to check out this Wiki page which lists lots of films, TV series, comics etc that feature humans being hunted. However from a BDSM hunt point of view the key words in Wiki's definition are "pursuit", "capture" and "recreation" :)

BDSM hunts - also known as sub hunts, subbie hunts or slave hunts - have been increasing in popularity for a few years now, both in terms of real time hunts and online. Second Life has quite a few hunting areas. The next hunt I'm aware of is Femdom Hunt 2 which runs over several days in October 2011.

Some real time hunts are now popular annual public events (such as the Northern California Fall Fox Hunt and the twice a year Southern California Fox Hunts) and these are a great deal of fun to take part in.

Other hunts are private and sometimes invitation only (such as the Cruel Huntress Sub Hunts in the UK, described by one attendee as "Inspired sadism at its best !!!"). Our own hunts fall in the latter category. They are not even promoted on Fetlife. This is to preserve the privacy of the players and also because we feel the logistics involved with successful Hunting require a screened, carefully crafted event.

What might you expect at a Hunt?

Every BDSM hunt is unique. The type of hunt depends on many things: the organizer, the attendees, the location, and the mindset of the prey, amongst other things. I've had people ask me if they are very serious events. I suppose they can be, especially if a formal, high protocol type of hunt is planned. But I find myself agreeing with MsAdventure (who runs the Cruel Huntress Femdom sub hunts, ) who posted on IC after a recent hunt:
"I always, always enjoy the hunt ... but i dont think Ive ever had one where my stomach has hurt from laughing so much before.."
MistressWatchful, who attended a Cruel Huntress hunt last year, found the same thing:
"The woods are set up so there is a winding path round, free of brambles, great for the Mistresses to wander along, peeking into the undergrowth, looking for prey. Soon the shots started, followed by squeals, followed by hysterical laughing."
Hunts can be large or small. You might find your favorite hunt consists of a one on one game of pursuit with your sub through an urban park ... or negotiating with a team a complex series of traps set in an industrial environment (like our Cockatoo Island hunts):


You might find you enjoy fantasy hunts where you get to indulge your inner hero / heroine by taking part in a Mythical Quests ... who knows what will happen when you finally find and "take down" The Golden Fleece or "open" Pandora's Box?!

You might find nothing beats a paintball hunt:


like the Fox Hunt at TEASE in 2010:
"a Team (2 people) event - utilizing TEASE paint ball guns, and TEASE paint balls, and TEASE safety goggles, designed for FUN and to increase our social interaction at Camp. This will be structured to allow an audience, and will be structured to ensure safety of all involved ... Each "Top" will hunt the "bottom" of the opposing Team..."
Or the Northern California Fall Fox Hunt:
"a live-action role-playing game of wit and prowess where a human fox attempts to outwit teams of human hunting dogs, ponies, hunters, handlers, and trainers in an outdoor setting. There are teams comprising human puppies, kitties, ponies and their handlers who search and capture a human fox or other prey .... The hunt often takes on a kinky bent where the team that captures the fox gets to negotiate a BDSM scene"
As you can see, all these hunts are run in very different ways, all innovative, all interesting. What if you prefer more traditional role play with your fox hunting?
"Fox hunting is an activity involving the tracking, chase, and sometimes killing of a fox, traditionally a red fox, by trained foxhounds or other scent hounds, and a group of followers led by a master of foxhounds, who follow the hounds on foot or on horseback..."

You might find a private hunt - on a (very) private property - is the way to go.

What roles are available to play?

Again this depends on the type of hunt. Perhaps you'll enjoy the role of Master of Foxhounds, surrounded by your dominant followers - some practicing pony play - while your submissive hounds race out out in front, in hot pursuit of that absolutely stunning (naked) red fox ....


And of course it's even more fun when you catch her....

For a variation on this theme, how about an "otter hunt"? SirGuy runs these in the UK:
"a pursuit-type hunt, with human-dogs on all fours, huntsmen controlling the dogs on 2 feet and a quarry that mostly runs on 4 feet, but can 'cheat' and get up on 2 feet if it looks like they'll be caught too soon.

"I call it an 'otter hunt' because when you hunt otters with dogs in Devon the hunters are on foot, as you can't take horses through the steep wooded combes and fast-flowing streams and rivers where the otters are hunted. But like a fox-hunt there will be hunt followers in human-pony-carts, mountain bikes, etc. Maybe someone on a quad bike to head off the quarry if it looks like they're heading towards a boundary where they may be spotted by local vanilla folk..."
You can see from SirGuy's description that you can have a lot of fun with this type of role play, regarding the many different roles to be played. For example, in traditional fox hunting dominants and switches might enjoy roles such as:
  • Master of Fox Hounds (who has final say over all matters in the field
  • The Kennelman (who looks after hounds in kennels, assuring that all tasks are completed when pack and staff return from hunting)
  • The Huntsman (responsible for directing the hounds in the course of the hunt. The Huntsman usually carries a horn to communicate to the hounds, followers and whippers in
  • Whippers-in (or "Whips", who assist the huntsman. Their main job is to keep the pack all together, especially to prevent the hounds from straying
Submissives have a wonderful range of choices in this particular game:
  • There are many different types of prey. Don't identify as that "absolutely stunning naked red fox"? How about a grey fox? Or coyote? Or golden jackal? Or deer / magical white hart? Read this Wiki page for ideas about different types of quarry.

  • You don't need to confine yourself to real quarry. Why not become a mythical beast .... what about a unicorn ... or a phoenix ... or a dragon .... or an elf or an orc? Entirely up to you...

  • You can also be an animal associated with the hunters, such as a horse / pony or hound ....or even a falcon, soaring before the hunt and alerting your master to the prey with your cries....
  • Don't fancy an animal role? There are some great servant roles, including presenting each hunter with a stirrup cup
What if you are looking for a specific orientation to your hunt?

Many hunts - especially public hunts - are open to all BDSM orientations and genders. Others are specifically Femdom or M/s (Master / slave).

However it's always worth double checking who can actually attend. At local hunts and also Cruel Huntress hunts usually both male and female subs may attend as long as attendees remember the Femdom orientation of the event. On the other hand Bound By Desire Hunts in Texas are for leather women only.

What about costs?

Costs are as variable as the hunt itself. Obviously a longer, more elaborate hunt in an exotic venue (which may require a fee) will cost more to pull together than a smaller hunt on a friend's property. Some organizers change all attendees, others (for example Femdom hunts) may only charge the prey (MsAdventure posts of Cruel Huntress sub hunts "we aim to keep the costs for a group Hunt to £50 per prey", this going towards the venue and other costs).

Once you have completed the application process and joined the Hunt List you'll be informed of the various events and able to choose which suit best in terms of cost and your interests.

How long does a hunt last?

Again this depends on the event. It may be half an hour, it may be a full weekend worth of related hunt activities, waking in luxury:


Or more likely camping overnight on our mountain with views of Mt Warning. Or if you are in the UK camping after a Cruel Huntress hunt. Again, once you are on the Hunt List you may chose the event which bests suits you.

Do you need scene experience?

Many organizers consider their Hunts to be for more experienced kinksters, as hunts are often labeled edgeplay. Certainly it helps to have knowledge of various play techniques which are commonly used on hunts.

Hunts have sometimes proved beneficial for experienced, jaded players, as OllieVW's testimonial on Ms Adventure's website reveals:
"I really was finding it hard to enjoy my desire for S&M. People, events, clubs were all becoming stale ... The Cruel Huntress Sub Hunt in October 2009 was a defining moment in my expansion and desire for S&M, it rekindled my passion for pain, provided me with the emotional pleasure (good & bad) that keeps my kink alive. I made friends, and have experiences and memories that will stick with me forever"
On the other hand MsAdventure has taken a risk and invited newbies and everything turned out well, as sp's testimonial shows:
"The November 2009 Cruel Huntress sub-hunt was my first kink event ever, and I cannot think of a more ideal start for anyone, or a more excellent event for anyone wishing to broaden their experience ... There was a wide range of guys there in terms of experience, age, likes and dislikes, but in spite of that, there was a great sense of togetherness...I've made a few friends through the hunt, plus everyone was really friendly and helpful; as a nervous newbie, I think a few people could see my nerves and a few of the quarry who had attended previously talked to me about things and helped me put my mind at rest. The Huntresses were brilliant..."
MistressWatchful found her hunt "a real defining moment in my progress as a Domme" while fungirl writes:
"As a newbie Domme I really had no idea of the impact that this event would have on me. I went along to my first hunt (by way of an invitation by a fellow Domme friend) to check things out and have a bit of "fun". What I found was my absolute enjoyment of chasing boys through the woods, shooting them and then torturing them The second hunt that I attended on the weekend gave me a chance to fine tune some of my skills and engage once again in whole hearted Domminess"
So all levels of experience enjoy the event - don't not apply to attend hunts because you are new!

Then it's time to start the paperwork. This may seem daunting but we need as much info as possible. The skill of a BDSM Hunt organizer is in identifying the fantasies and desires of their hunt attendees, and creating an environment where those desires and fantasies can manifest safely. The documents we've requested you complete will help us achieve this. They will confirm whether your hunting interests / fantasies are compatible with those already in the hunting party (both prey and hunters) and allow us to personalize each Hunt to match your interests.

"While "Safe, Sane and Consensual" (SSC) attempts to describe and differentiate BDSM from abuse in ways that are easy for the non-BDSM public to comprehend, RACK differs from it in that it acknowledges that nothing is ever 100% inherently safe. By acknowledging that what may be safe or sane to one person may not be considered the same to another, the RACK philosophy tends to be more inclusive of activities that others may consider as edgeplay. There is no "safe" or "not safe" within RACK, only "safer" and "less safe."

Some prey prefer more goal oriented hunts where there is a possibility of "winning" built into the game. For example, the sub might have to complete a certain task during the run, or reach a certain destination before the hunters, or stay free for a certain amount of time. If they achieve this they win rewards during take down, rather than being punished for being captured. Do you think you might like this sort of thing?
